Bairnsdale is a town located in the East Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia. The town is situated on the banks of the Mitchell River, which was named after the explorer Thomas Livingstone Mitchell. The town is named after a Scottish pastoralist John Baird, who was one of the first landowners in the region. Bairnsdale has a rich and colorful history that dates back to the 1840s and it has played a significant role in the development of the region as well as the state of Victoria.

The land that is now Bairnsdale was initially explored by Europeans in the early 1800s. The first Europeans to explore the area was a group of men led by Captain John Lhotsky, who arrived in the area in 1834. Soon after Lhotsky's exploration, a number of graziers and squatters began to travel to the area. One of these was a Scottish immigrant named John Baird, who arrived in the area in 1842.

Baird quickly established a successful pastoral business in the area and, in recognition of his achievement, the town was named after him when it was first established in 1853. Bairnsdale quickly became a hub for the surrounding pastoral industry and attracted a range of tradespeople who established businesses in the town. The town also became an important transport hub for the region, with the first railway line being built in the town in 1893.

During the late 1800s, the town experienced a period of rapid growth as the surrounding area became an important agricultural and timber-producing region. The town's population grew rapidly during this time and a number of new businesses were established in the area. The town also became a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors who were interested in exploring the surrounding bushland and rivers.

Throughout the twentieth century, Bairnsdale continued to grow and develop. The town's railway station played a key role in the development of the region, with the town becoming an important hub for the transport of agricultural and timber products. The town also continued to attract visitors, with the development of a number of tourist attractions. Some of the most popular tourist attractions in the town include the Bairnsdale Speedway, the Bairnsdale Aquatic Centre, and the Bairnsdale Regional Library and Gallery.

Today, Bairnsdale is a thriving regional center that is home to a range of businesses and industries. The town is known for its beautiful natural scenery, and there are plenty of opportunities to explore the surrounding bushland and rivers. The town is also home to a range of cultural and sporting events, including the Gippsland Lakes Fishing Contest and the East Gippsland Agricultural and Pastoral Show. Bairnsdale is a vibrant and exciting destination that has a rich history and a promising future.
