Bairnsdale

Bairnsdale, considered the gateway to the Lakes and Wilderness Region of East Gippsland, is a small city in the state of Victoria. Situated on the flats of the Mitchell River, the city is located about 281 kilometres east of Melbourne, the state capital. While there are a couple of ideas on how Bairnsdale got its name, the most common belief is that the city was named after the town of Bernisdale in Scotland where the family of Archibald McLeod, a pioneer settler in the area, had a home.

Proclaimed a city on 14 July 1990, Bairnsdale is the seat of the Local Government Area of the Shire of East Gippsland. A major regional centre of eastern Victoria, the city is within the State District of Gippsland East (in the Victorian Legislative Assembly) and the Federal Division of Gippsland (in the Australian House of Representatives). It has an estimated population of 11,282 residents.

Thanks to its natural and cultural heritage, the city of Bairnsdale has much for local and visiting tourists to experience and enjoy:

Considering the city's geographical position, one can start off with an exploration of the natural sights in and around Bairnsdale. One particular "must visit" location is Mitchell River National Park. Another interesting place to visit is naturally-occurring silt jetties at the mouth of the Mitchell River.

Bairnsdale culture may be experienced throughout the year, thanks to the various guided walking trails, heritage-listed houses, and museums within the area. The city also holds annual events that draw people from all around such as the Bairnsdale Country Music Festival (March), Australian Line Dancing Championships (April), East Gippsland Agricultural Field Days (April), Bairnsdale Cup (September), and Agricultural Show (November).

Bairnsdale also has much to offer its various enthusiasts thanks to the city's other recreational activities. These include Australian Rules football, field hockey, fishing, golf, and horse racing.
